Being a leader in the gold buying industry comes with its share of responsibilities, and sometimes you just have to speak out the truth however harsh it may sound. Many clients come to us on a daily basis to sell diamond jewellery like bracelets, necklaces, rings and other valuable items that they may have had for a long time, or may have acquired as family heirloom. Some people prefer to sell off the diamonds instead of letting them lie at the bottom of their jewelry boxes for ages. It gives them quick cash and also makes space for new jewelry with contemporary designs.
Some people sell their engagement rings too. May be a marriage turned sour, or a relationship that didn’t work… each diamond we buy tells a different tale. If only diamonds could speak!
So, coming back to the point where this blog started. As the top diamond buyers in Toronto, we get many clients trying to sell their jewelry to us. As part of our awesome customer care policy, we always encourage our clients to partake in the assessment process which helps determine the value of your jewelry and also its price. Based on the assessment, we offer you the best price for your diamonds and other jewelry that you may want to sell to us.
But at times, it is this assessment that shatters so many hopes and exposes so many family secrets. A family heirloom might turn out to be made of fake diamonds, or a gift of love made of synthetic ones.
It is always better to know your diamond before you try to sell it. You can carry out a preliminary test on your own to determine the authenticity of your diamond, or take it to a diamond buyer for a genuine and professional assessment.
There are some ways in which you can determine the authenticity of your diamonds even at home. try a one or all of the below mentioned methods to see whether you have the real rock.
- The Fog Test: One of the easiest and yet effective methods. If you have loose diamonds on you, this test is easily done. Hold the diamond in front of your mouth and exhale with your mouth open. The breath from your mouth will fog up your diamond, but an authentic rock will disperse the heat quickly. Only if your diamond is a fake will it remain fogged for more than a few seconds.
- Strength and Setting: Diamonds are formed deep within the earth’s core and cooked over billions of years to turn into the dazzling stones that represent everlasting true love. While they are tough rocks, they are not completely impervious to scratches. But if your jewelry has diamonds with too many scratches in them, you might want to get a professional opinion about its authenticity. Also, if the setting is lose on your ring or necklace, chances are you have a synthetic or fake diamond.
- The Light Test: The brilliance of diamonds comes from their ability to refract light so sharply that each particle of light is sent back in different directions. Try reading through an inverted diamond. If you succeed in reading the newspaper or book, then you have a fake one. You should be happy if you are not able to read through your diamond.
You can try these in combination or as standalone tests to determine the authenticity of the diamonds in your jewelry. But whichever method you use, the best and the most foolproof way is to get it checked by a professional assessor.
